O Lord you have searched me

O Lord you have searched me and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down;

you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.

You hem me in—behind and before;

you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 139. v 1-10.

Like me, you may not be sleeping too well at the moment or you may be waking very early. I’m thanking God for the sunshine and the arrival of spring…….but with it comes the dawn chorus…..

In this unsettling time, I’m trying to learn to offer my waking thoughts to God and to make prayer the first thing I do…even whilst not fully awake…before anything else can crowd into my being.

As ordinary life ceases, bit by bit, it’s actually becoming easier to wake and turn immediately to Him and to offer up my day, my concerns and to pray for my friends and family and anything else on my mind.

It’s also a very good time to listen and to hear from Him. A time of intimacy away from the world.

Psalm 139 is such an intimate psalm. It speaks of a God who knows everything about us. The psalmist acknowledges this and surrenders.

He also seeks God. Verse 17 says; How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

Father, thank you that you created me and you know me, you guide me and you hold me fast. Help me to surrender more and more to your Holy Spirit so that I may know you better.
